Sophie Grace Maui
Native Californian Jamie Shepherd began making jewelry while working as the public relations manager at a fashion boutique in Maui, Hawaii in 2007. After much prayer and encouragement, she decided to test out her handmade designs in the storefront. Her pieces sold-out quick enough to convince her to launch Sophie Grace Maui, named after her daughter. Since then, she has created a full line of island-inspired jewelry at her studio in Maui's oceanfront surfer-hippie-traveler outpost of Paia.
Jewelry design was not Jamie’s original path. She was successfully climbing the corporate ladder as a sales rep in Southern California's wine & spirits industry before trading in her heels for sandy toes. She discovered Maui when she missed her outbound flight while vacationing with her husband, and they decided to risk it all to pursue their dreams of island life— they quit their jobs, packed up their belongings and moved to Hawaii. Her background in fashion continues to inform her designs (and she still wears her heels every now and then).
For her 2016 collection Sophie Grace pulled inspiration from the natural elements found in her island home from raw, semiprecious stones and shells, to gold-dipped shark's teeth and black tahitian pearls. "I've always designed with the beach-loving girl in mind. Here in Hawaii, we spend most of our leisure time by the sea. Our wardrobe is dictated by the sunshine, the warm rain and the trade winds, and luckily, it usually involves a bikini, jewelry and sandy bare feet. The pieces that I selected for this collection can easily be worn on your daily adventures or a night out," Jamie says.
In 2016, Jamie Shepherd collaborated with the island casual retail brand, Tommy Bahama, nationwide. Sophie Grace Maui has a presence poolside at the Grand Wailea Resort.
