I would never have believed you if you told me 5 years ago I would be living in Maui and designing jewelry for a living. I was raised in Southern California and went to school for Psychology and Public Relations. While I was busy climbing the corporate ladder I met my husband and found myself soon after being moved to an island. Quickly realizing that I had little career opportunity in Maui I asked the Lord to bless me with something I could call my own. I began doing Public Relations for a fashion designer who saw my designs and put them in her store. She asked me one day why I wasn’t doing this full time, with encouragement from my husband, I resigned one month later. Now it has turned into a family business and I get to do this full time. I still think the whole thing is kind of silly, but I’m thankful that God blessed me with a life I wouldn’t have dreamed to ask for.
I was certain of two things when it came time to choose a business name. One, that I wanted it to be personable. Something people could relate to and remember. And two, that I didn’t want it to be my name. Sophie was the name that my husband and I had chosen for our future little girl, should we ever be so lucky. And Grace was what we felt the good Lord had bestowed so generously upon us. I felt kind of silly that first six months in our Kiosk when asked several times a day if I was Sophie Grace. Especially since we weren’t even pregnant yet. And then the day after the Grand Opening of the new Sophie Grace Maui boutique, I found out that I was expecting! And though “Grace” was never intended to be her middle name, it just seemed appropriate.
I hope that the next time that you are in Maui you will visit us at our new location, pool side at The Grand Wailea.
